About Me
Who am I? Well, I am 79-year-young lady, still in pretty good health and enjoying this stage of life more each day. I live right about in the middle of North Carolina in a small town with those big, 2-story white houses with columns, wrap around porches. big oak and maple trees and green grass. I love living in the “Piedmont” because it puts me just a few hours from the mountains and the beach. I especially enjoy beach trips—long walks on the sand searching for seashells or sitting on the beach with a good book and glass of lemonade with a ocean breeze and the sound of the waves in the background. Ah, this is my “happy place”!
I must say that I agree with the Economical Development Partnership of North Carolina that this state stands out for its exceptional quality of life, with affordable living, great job market and scenic natural beauty. The state is a top choice for families, professionals, and retirees seeking a balanced lifestyle by having access to both urban amenities and outdoor adventures.
When I’m not outside, you might find me enjoying one of my other favorite pasttimes: reading. I enjoy light mysteries and uplifting stories, especially books by Nicholas Sparks, Clive Cussler, John Grisham, and wonderful female authors like Rosamunde Pilcher, Mary Alice Monroe and Debbie Macomber.
About My Gardens
It has been a blessing and so much fun to grow my own vegetables. A friend’s Father that had many acres of land outside our town allowed me to use a small plot of land for two years so I could “get my fingers (quite literally) in the dirt”. I planted half-runner green beans (yes, they have “strings” but such a good flavor; don’t know why they were named “half-runners” because they could and would run to the top of a very tall tree if planted next to it!), bush beans, green peppers, baby lima beans, tomatoes, cucumbers (the small whitish ones), yellow squash, okra, Silver Queen corn, cantaloupe and watermelon.
Whew! That was a huge amount of work but I loved it and was so proud of my harvests each year. If you are a gardener, here is a great trick to keep the weeds at bay: find a carpet store and ask for some old carpet that they have pulled up. It’s not too hard to cut to the width of your rows. Lay it carpet side up and you will have a nice, soft surface to walk on. It sure keeps the mud off your shoes and you can reuse it for several years.
About Me and My Home
The home I live in is on a corner which means the yard is a little bigger than most in my neighborhood. The original residents (first owners: 1967-2025) had planted quite a few trees but no flower beds. So, I proceeded to tear up the front yard in three places and start my flower beds. I installed several varieties of iris and lilies, peonies, a butterfly bush, azaleas, Gerber daisies, daffodils, roses and hostas which are perennials that will come back year after year (unless voles or squirrels dig them up or eat them!). There is still a lot of open space in each bed so I check out the Clearance racks at the local hardware/garden shops for new varieties to add to my flower gardens.
