E-Business and E-Marketing Should be Knowledge We All Share

E-Business and E-Marketing Should Be Knowledge We All Share because whether we realize it or not, marketing touches our lives almost every day.

Think about your day for a minute.

You turn on the television and see a commercial. You check something online and an advertisement appears. You watch a video and suddenly there’s another ad. You open an email, drive past a billboard or notice a company sponsoring something in your community.

Marketing is everywhere.

But some of the most interesting marketing doesn’t even look like advertising.

Marketing Is Hiding in Plain Sight.

Have you ever watched a television show or movie and noticed the car someone is driving?

What about the soft drink sitting on the table, the computer being used, the shoes someone is wearing or the restaurant where the characters meet?

Sometimes those products are simply part of the scene. Other times their appearance is a form of product placement—a way for a brand to be seen without stopping the story for a traditional commercial.

Once you start looking for it, you’ll probably begin noticing it everywhere.

And that’s part of understanding marketing.

Advertising Is All Around Us.

Of course, plenty of marketing is much easier to recognize.

Businesses advertise through websites, social media, videos, email, radio, television, podcasts, sponsorships and many other places.

Why?

Because people generally have to discover something before they can decide whether they want it.

That may sound almost too simple, but think about it. You can’t visit a restaurant you’ve never heard of. You can’t investigate a product you don’t know exists. And you can’t decide whether a service might be useful until something introduces you to it.

Marketing helps make that introduction.

Then the Internet Changed Everything.

Years ago, a local business might have depended heavily on newspaper advertisements, radio commercials, signs, direct mail or word of mouth.

Those methods certainly haven’t disappeared, but the Internet opened an entirely different door.

Today, a small business—or even one person working from home—can have a website that people can find far beyond the local community.

That is where E-Business and E-Marketing enter the picture.

E-Business simply refers to conducting some or all of a business through electronic and online technology. E-Marketing is the use of those digital tools to introduce, explain and promote products, services, information or opportunities.

Websites, search engines, email, online advertising, videos, blogs and social media have all become part of that world.

And it continues to change.

You Don’t Have to Own a Big Company.

This may be one of the biggest changes the Internet brought with it.

You don’t necessarily have to manufacture a product, own a store or have a warehouse full of merchandise to participate in online marketing.

One example is affiliate marketing.

An affiliate can introduce other people to a company’s product, service or program through online content and a special referral link. If someone follows that link and completes a qualifying purchase or action, the affiliate may receive compensation according to that company’s program.

That doesn’t mean money magically appears because someone puts a link on a website. People still have to find the information, find it useful and decide for themselves whether they are interested.

But it does create another way for individuals to participate in E-Business.

There are also rules worth knowing when you participate in affiliate marketing. The Federal Trade Commission provides guidance about endorsements, affiliate relationships and when those relationships should be disclosed. You can read the FTC’s guidance HERE.

Where Residual Affiliate Marketing Fits In.

There is another part of this subject that we explore here at 2r96.com: Residual Affiliate Marketing.

Rather than trying to squeeze the entire subject onto this page, I’ve given it a page of its own. That’s where we can look more closely at the concept, how online content can continue working after it is published, and how different parts of a website can give people more ways to discover what you have to share.

Knowledge Changes What You Notice.

You may never look at a movie, television program, website or even your own smartphone quite the same way again.

Start paying attention.

Notice the products appearing in the programs you watch. Look at the advertisements that follow you around the Internet. Think about how you first discovered a product you now use regularly. Notice how businesses use websites and online information to reach people they could never have reached years ago.

You don’t have to become a marketing expert.

But understanding a little more about E-Business and E-Marketing can help you understand something that is already happening around you every day.

And that is why I believe this is knowledge we all should share.
